Professional Piano Tuning

The most important step after acquiring a piano is to have it professionally tuned. Piano tuning demands specialized training and experience to ensure high quality. It is also important to consider the substantial investment you have already made. Regardless of the quality of your instrument, it will be influenced over time by variations in temperature and humidity, as well as by its usage.

Concert Preparation

Unlike a piano used in domestic settings, a concert instrument must perform at its optimal level at all times. Consequently, it is imperative that the instrument is properly prepared and tuned prior to each use. Of course, I will tune the instrument and make sure the regulation and tone are even before checking that the pedal functions correctly. Should the pianist be available for the tuning, I would be pleased to collaborate with them to customize the instrument to their specific preferences.

Toning and Voicing

It is generally accepted that when a piano is first built, its tone will be what could be described as bright or hard. The process of "toning" is initiated in the factory to ensure the instrument achieves an acceptable tone quality. Once the piano is delivered to its new location and has undergone a period of use, I will consult with you regarding the preferred tone, the piano, and the room in which the instrument is housed. Since the quality of any sound produced is directly influenced by the acoustics of the room—such as its size, the presence of wooden or carpeted floors, and the quantity of soft furnishings—this consideration is essential. For these reasons, final tone adjustment should be undertaken once the instrument has been situated and evaluated in its designated environment.

Regulation

Regulation involves fine-tuning the various components of the piano mechanism to ensure that each of the 88 keys responds identically. While the factory initially performs these adjustments, over time, as the piano is played and acclimates to its environment, the felts and leathers will settle, which may affect the touch. To address these inconsistencies, I will thoroughly inspect all mechanisms of the piano and implement necessary adjustments and compensations to restore the instrument to its original factory specifications. This service is particularly beneficial for neglected or poorly maintained instruments, as it can significantly enhance both performance and value. Subsequently, I recommend regular maintenance, ideally every six months, to preserve optimal performance.
