Tuning
| |
Your piano was designed and built so that under
normal use and conditions, it should need tuning about twice a year. Many
have their piano tuned three or four times a year. During my years at the
Kennedy Center, I tuned the concert pianos before every rehearsal and
before every performance. In professional recording studios, the piano is
tuned three or four times each week as a matter of course. However, you
should have the piano tuned as often as you think necessary.

Action Regulation
| |
 |
|
Action
regulation addresses the touch of the piano. Do the keys feel too heavy or
too light? What about the repetition? Is it sluggish? or, do the keys feel
like they don't stay underneath your fingers, in that you lose control? Is
the action uneven?

Voicing
| |
Voicing is to some extent a matter of preference. Some prefer a "bright"
sound while others prefer a mellow sound. Whatever your preference, every
piano will acquire a somewhat brighter tone with time, because the hammer
felts will be compacted as they are thrown against the strings. Often, the
tone is uneven. One note could be "bright" and the one next to it mellow.
When we voice a piano, we make the tone even. It can be evenly bright, or
evenly mellow. That depends on you and the piano.

Choosing a
New or Used Piano
| |
 |
|
When
selecting a new piano, there are three main areas of consideration.
1. The
power and sustain of the tone.
2. The
action geometry.
3. The
instrument's ability to be voiced.
The power and sustain is a function of the soundboard assembly and the case. the
action geometry has to do with the touch of the keyboard, and its
responsiveness. The voicing determines if the tone is bright or soft and whether
it is even. I have assisted many people in the selection of their new piano,
including many teachers, artists and institutions, including the Kennedy Center.
